As a newborn photographer in Houston most clients will ask me what to wear when booking a portrait session. I will always gladly help style a newborn session to their personal taste, nursery decor, hobby, etc. I think those portraits are usually my most successful looking ones! With a little planning you too can be confident that your newborn portraits will reflect what is unique about your newest addition.
First you need to decide where the newborn portraits will be displayed and choose a coordinating color palette for the clothing. If you want to hang the portraits on the nursery wall or any place else on your home I would suggest wearing coordinating colors from that decor. If you prefer to keep family portraits in an album then choose colors that compliment your family best. If you’re not sure where the portraits will end up choosing neutral colors like beige and grey are always a safe bet.
The first and easiest person to style is the newborn. They are already so perfect just the way they are, why cover them up with clothes? Newborns often aren’t filling out clothes (even the tiniest sizes) so I suggest photographing them bare-chested with diaper covers, wrapped up in baby blankets, and in their birthday suit. Not every parent is comfortable with bare chested and birthday suits, decide in advance of you appointment what you and your partner are comfortable with. If your preference is clothing for the newborn then please make sure the the outfit fits the baby well. I bring along several blankets and diaper covers to every newborn session but I almost always find something from the client’s home to throw into the mix to add a personal touch. What type of items do I look for? Quilts, throw pillows, hair bows/hats, swaddle blankets, stuffed animals, and scarves usually get scouted out and dropped in the portraits at some point. Below are several examples of a mixture of my props and items found in the client’s home.
There are so many great places to look for newborn accessories! I can spend hours looking through local Houston stores like Doodles, and Purple Mango and also national retailers like Baby Gap and Janie and Jack. Below are a few of my favorite Etsy and online shops I scout for newborn props:
Pretty Luxe Designs: beautifully delicate headbands, hair bows and tiebacks for newborn girls.
Baby Bliss Props: tiny classic knit hats for boys and girls, baby wraps in just about every color you can think of!
Sprinkles for Sprouts: ornately decorated headbands and props mostly for baby girls.
SoftKnots: more classic knit baby hats and bloomers.
MadAboutColour: fun bright & bold knit newborn props
Mia Joy Studio: gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous heirloom rompers, dresses and headbands for those of you with deep pockets.
OK now onto the parents. What should you wear? Stay tuned for Part 2 of Newborn Portrait Tips: What should my family wear?
